This painting was inspired by a photo I took at the St. Louis Zoo in April of 2010. They have a beautiful man-made waterfall at the zoo near the front.

Here is the photo I based this painting off of. I did make a few changes to the colors and changed the way the top tree looks.

Art Every Day Month (AEDM) has been a blast and I am thankful that I found Leah's website. Thank you to all who have left comments. Thank you also to Leah Piken Kolidas, who started the Creative Every Day blog, and inspires all of us to live a creative life. I hope to continue on with Creative Every Day, the year-long challenge. Even though my AEDM paintings aren't masterpieces, I feel accomplished.

The past two days I've felt like painting in black and white. Maybe it's my dull mood from the weather. I love black and white though! Here is the painting I worked on this morning based on a photo that I took at Garden of the Gods last summer, the last of my AEDM paintings for 2009!

I haven't had much success in the past couple of days coming up with something to paint. I know I know...I can paint anything around me. I've just not had much inspiration today. So here are some trees. When all else fails, practice painting trees and clouds! :)

Simply Pure - a monochrome grouping project

I decided to work on a project today and yesterday that would consist of a grouping of all the same size canvas and each painting would be monochromatic. I chose green, blue, and purple because I wanted to stay in the cool range of colors. The above photo is similar to what the grouping might look like hanging on a wall. I just finished the blue piece today.

I arranged each painting side by side on the table, snapped a photo, then put white dividers in between them in GIMP (freeware photo editing software).

Just another practice landscape painting while attempting to paint it in monochrome. This is my first monochromatic painting. I can see where I could have put some more contrast into it...maybe add a few highlights here and there. I wanted to paint another 8 X 10, but I ran out of 8 X 10 canvas board and Michael's is closed.

Wrote and posted this story at 9:00 pm, about 18 hours after the original post of the piece...

This painting was inspired by the movie "The Wizard of Oz." But after I got about halfway through the painting process in this piece, I had an intense feeling that this picture relates to my current life.

My mom is very ill right now. I'll try to describe how this piece translates. The tornado (swirlys) and bright colors represent the range and intensity of my emotions. I'll explain. The blue in the center is representative of when I feel sad. The outer edge (the red), represents my feeling the need to take immediate action to help my mom.

The other swirly colors in between the red and blue (orange, yellow, green) represent the rest of my emotions...almost like going through Elizabeth Kubler-Ross' Stages of Grief, which can be applied to many different situations. In Kubler-Ross' model, one can move from the first stage to the second or beyond, and then take a plunge back to the first stage. One day I am angry at the illness, the next day I am sad, and so forth. It's like a cycle (tornado) for me right now.

So you might be wondering what the witch is all about. The witch is the sickness itself and I want it to go away! As far as the house, it represents my family and how our lives have been effected by the illness.

Update! -- As of December, my mom is doing much better!
